Sea Freight Rates: How Ocean Freight Cost Is Built
Last updated: 2026-08-11
An ocean freight quote is rarely one number. Understanding which charges are inside the rate, which sit at origin and which land on you at destination is the difference between a budget that holds and one that slips by hundreds of dollars per container.
Anatomy of an ocean freight quote
| Component | What it covers | Usually paid by |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean base rate | Port-to-port carriage | Whoever holds the freight term |
| Bunker / fuel surcharge | Fuel cost adjustment | Freight payer |
| Origin THC & documentation | Terminal handling and paperwork at load port | Shipper (usually) |
| Destination THC | Terminal handling at discharge port | Consignee (usually) |
| Seasonal / peak surcharges | Demand-driven adjustments | Freight payer |
| Detention & demurrage | Container time overruns | Consignee |
What actually moves rates
- Capacity balance on the lane — vessel deployment versus booked volume.
- Fuel — feeds straight into surcharges.
- Equipment availability — a shortage of the right container type at origin.
- Routing risk — canal, security or congestion detours add sea days and cost.
- Seasonality — pre-holiday and pre-Ramadan surges on Asia–Gulf lanes.
How to calculate sea freight cost
For FCL, cost is per container: base rate + surcharges + origin + destination charges. For LCL, cost is charged on the greater of cubic metres or metric tonnes (w/m) — so you must know your CBM before you can price anything.
Worked FCL example (illustrative figures only):
- Ocean base + surcharges for one 40ft: assume USD 1,800
- Origin handling and documents: assume USD 250
- Destination THC, delivery order and clearance: assume USD 400
- Indicative total: USD 2,450 per 40ft

Gulf-specific considerations
Jebel Ali, Dammam, Sohar, Hamad and Shuwaikh have different destination charge structures and free-time allowances. Free time is the single most underestimated cost: a few days of demurrage can exceed the ocean rate saving you negotiated.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are quoted sea freight rates guaranteed?
- No. Estimates and market references are indicative; only a carrier or forwarder booking confirmation with validity dates is a firm rate.
- How long is an ocean freight quote valid?
- Commonly to the end of the month or a stated validity window, and subject to space and equipment availability at booking.
- Does a cheaper ocean rate mean a cheaper shipment?
- Not necessarily — destination charges, free time and detention terms often decide the total more than the base rate does.
