FCL vs LCL Shipping: Which Is Cheaper for Your Cargo?
Last updated: 2026-08-11
LCL looks cheaper until it isn't. Because LCL is priced on volume-or-weight while FCL is priced per box, there is always a break-even point where filling your own container becomes the lower total cost — and it usually arrives earlier than importers expect.
How each is priced
LCL is charged on w/m: the greater of your CBM or your weight in metric tonnes, plus per-shipment fees at both ends. FCL is a flat rate per container regardless of how full it is.
LCL's per-shipment fees (CFS, handling, documentation, destination deconsolidation) do not shrink with small volumes, which is why very small LCL shipments have a high effective cost per CBM.
The break-even rule
Divide the all-in FCL cost by the LCL all-in cost per CBM. That gives the CBM at which FCL becomes cheaper. With a usable capacity around 25–28 CBM for a 20ft and 54–58 CBM for a 40ft, most lanes break even somewhere in the 12–18 CBM range.
| Volume | Typical better option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8 CBM | LCL | Container would be mostly empty air |
| 8–15 CBM | Compare carefully | Break-even zone; destination fees decide |
| Over 15 CBM | FCL (20ft) | Lower cost per CBM, less handling |
| Over 28 CBM | FCL (40ft / 40HC) | Second box or larger box wins |
Deciding in practice
Measure your cargo, get the true CBM from the CBM Calculator, then price both options for the same lane in the freight module. Compare landed totals, not ocean rates.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is w/m in LCL pricing?
- Weight or measurement — you are charged on the greater of cubic metres or metric tonnes, so dense cargo can be charged on weight even when it occupies little space.
- Is LCL slower than FCL?
- Usually yes. Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination typically add several days at each end.
- Can I ship 20 CBM as LCL?
- You can, but at that volume a 20ft FCL is often cheaper and safer once destination per-CBM charges are included.
