Container loading optimisation

How to plan an export container load, step by step

  1. Take carton dimensions, carton gross weight and quantity per SKU from the packing list.
  2. Convert to CBM (L × W × H in metres × quantity) and total the gross weight.
  3. Test the carton fit against internal container dimensions, not nominal volume.
  4. Check gross weight against the ~28 MT payload limit before choosing 40-ft over 20-ft.
  5. Sequence the stow: heavy and dense SKUs first, light and fragile SKUs last.
  6. Issue the load plan with the booking so the CFS or factory loads to plan.

Loading patterns for cartons, pallets and drums

  • Cartons, floor-loaded: brick-stack in alternating rows for maximum fill; expect 90–95% utilisation.
  • Palletised cartons: 11 Euro pallets in a 20-ft, 23–24 in a 40-ft; utilisation typically 78–85%.
  • 200 L drums: 80 upright in a 20-ft, 160 in a 40-ft; secure with dunnage bags between rows.
  • Big bags / jumbo bags: 20 × 1 MT bags in a 20-ft, weight-limited long before volume.

Volumetric vs gross weight in FCL

FCL sea freight is priced per container, so volume usually decides the box size and weight only matters against the payload cap. Dense cargo — tiles, steel, minerals, chemicals in drums — hits roughly 28 MT long before it fills 33 CBM, which is why it ships in 20-ft boxes. Bulky, light cargo such as polymer bags or foam runs out of volume first and belongs in a 40HC at 76 CBM.

Container utilisation is the share of the container's internal volume actually filled by cargo, shown as a percentage. Freight is charged per container, not per CBM, so anything below roughly 85% utilisation means you are paying for air.
