Petrochemical Price Index: Benchmarks Traders Actually Use

Last updated: 2026-08-11

A petrochemical price index compresses many transactions into a single reference so that contracts, budgets and formulas have something stable to point at. Knowing how an index is constructed tells you exactly how much weight to give it.

How an index is constructed

Most petrochemical references are assessments rather than exchange prices: reporters collect deals, bids and offers over a window, filter out unrepresentative trades, and publish a range plus a midpoint on a defined basis (for example CFR South East Asia, a stated grade and packaging).

Because they are assessments, two providers can legitimately publish different numbers for the same day.

Benchmarks that matter for Gulf polymer buyers

  • Feedstock references — naphtha and ethane economics set the cost floor.
  • Regional monomer references — ethylene and propylene drive polyolefin direction.
  • Polymer grade references — PE, PP, PVC and PET move with monomer plus regional balance.

Grade-level detail sits in Tradloc's polymer price intelligence and petrochemicals module.

From index to your landed number

An index is a starting point, not a cost. To reach a decision-grade number, add the differential for your grade and origin plant, then the freight leg, then duty and VAT at your port. The workflow is set out in the landed cost guide.

Why forecasts should be treated as scenarios

Polymer forecasts hinge on capacity start-up timing, feedstock direction and freight. Treat any published forecast as one scenario with stated assumptions rather than a prediction, and re-test it whenever a major plant or lane changes status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a petrochemical index the same as an exchange price?
No. Most petrochemical references are price assessments compiled from reported transactions, not cleared exchange settlements.
Which index should I write into a contract?
Whichever assessment both parties can access and audit, with the basis (Incoterm, grade, region, publication window) written explicitly into the clause.
Does Tradloc publish a live index?
No. Tradloc produces indicative estimates for decision support and does not republish licensed third-party assessments.
